Episode #25, Scene 5: The Case of Rei Ayanami
This scene was the subject of my first effort to make a "script page", the precursor to the contemporary CPs. I've overhauled the format and revised things a little, but more heavy-duty Engrish removal will come later.

129 | Bandaged Rei. Rei 3 "Who are you?" |
130 | TELOP: "Rei Ayanami"
131 | Rei in a mirror. Rei 3 "You are also Rei Ayanami?" |
132 | Rei in plugsuit. Rei 2 "Indeed, I am that which is called Rei Ayanami." |
133 | Child Rei. Rei 1 "All of us are things called Rei Ayanami." |
134 | Rei 3 across from Child Rei. |
135 | Rei 2 beyond Rei 3 (who was just seen from the front speaking). Rei 2 "Because other people call all of us Rei Ayanami." |
| 136 | Rei 1 across from Rei 3. Rei 1 "Why do you have a false mind and a false body?" |
Reichu: Originally, this was going to be a regular (albeit floating) Rei 1 rather than the Disembodied Head of Chibi Doom
137 | Rei 3, front UP. Rei 3 "They are not false. I am me." |
138 | Glasses case UP. Rei 1 (OFF) "No, you are a person whose false soul was made by a human called Gendo Ikari." At the end of the cut, it is closed with a click. |
Reichu: The verb here that I begrudingingly translated as "to make" is virtually the only thing in this scene that doesn't "fit", IMO. It's something that seems to have been thrown in only as a monkey wrench to proofs that are otherwise air-fucking-tight!! "False soul" + "made" = zomg wtf bbq?!? There's zero evidence, otherwise, in NGE that souls can be "made", only transferred from one vessel to another. (Not getting into the convoluted EVA-00 and Kyoko territories...) More importantly, we know for a fact that Rei's soul was not "made" -- it came from somebody else, the "true you" of whom Rei 1 speaks. Ahh... This is more heavy-duty than I should be getting. Sorry. |

139 | Side profile of Rei gazing at the glasses. Rei 1 (OFF) "You are no more than a fabricated object pretending to be human." |
140 | Child Rei UP Rei 1 "Look within yourself. Is there not a mind so shrouded in darkness you can neither see nor understand it?" |
141 | Rei's leering, laughing mouth UP. T·U. Rei 1 "That is where the true you exists." |
142 | Rei UP. Rei 2 "I am me. I have become what I am now through my connections to other people." |
143 | A silhouetted Rei sinking into water. |
144 | Text: "Those are bonds?"
145 | Rei, side profile UP. T·B. |
146 | Text: "Those are bonds"
| 147 | Child Rei UP. |

148 | The Rei inside the tank turning around in unison
149 | Child Rei, side profile UP. Rei 1 "It's just that you don't know her." |
| 150 | Rei turning around in unison. | ||
151 | Child Rei's eye UP. T·U. Rei 1 "Because you don't want to look at it, you're just avoiding something inside you that you don't understand." |
152 | Text: "Because you're afraid"
et al. |
153 | Pictures. Rei 1 (OFF) "Because she might not have a human form." |
154 | Rei smiling and laughing underwater. Rei 1 (OFF) "Because you might cease to be who you are now." |
155 | Text: "You are afraid"
156 | Silhouettes of Rei slowly falling apart. Child Rei standing in front of them. Rei 1 "Afraid that your current self will cease to be." Rei 1 "Afraid that you will disappear from within the minds of others." |
157 | Rei, side profile UP. Rei 3 "Afraid? I don't understand." |
158 | Smiling Rei, side profile UP. Rei 1 "The world of your current self will be no more." |
159 | Text: "Aren't you afraid?"
160 | Laughing face UP. Rei 1 "Your current self will fade away." |
161 | Text: "Aren't you afraid?"
| 162 | Rei sitting in folding chair. T·U. Rei 3 "No, I'm overjoyed." Rei 3 (right) "I am one who desires death." Rei 3 (left) "All I need is despair." Rei 3 "I want to return to nothing." |
Reichu: Rei's line "I want to return to nothing" is "Mu e to kaeritai no". This is a recurring sentiment in NGE, most aggressively presented in "Komm, süsser Tod": "It all returns to nothing..." (originally "Mu e no kaerou", "Let's return to nothing", in "Amaki shi yo, kitare").
163 | Black screen. Rei 2 "But you can't." |
| 164 | Moon from ED. T·B. Rei 2 "You can't return to nothing." |
165 | Glasses on top of a chest. T·B. Rei 2 "That person won't let you return." |
Reichu: She really is saying "that person" (ano hito) rather than "he/him" (kare, or various other options). I'm not sure why this is, but it makes for a very Engrish translation. |

166 | Rei regarding the glasses. Rei 3 "Won't let me return and end it yet." |
167 | Smiling Rei engaged in conversation. Rei 2 (OFF) "I existed because that person needed me." |
| 168 | Rei sitting in a folding chair. T·U. Rei 3 "But in the end..." Rei 3 "I won't be needed." Rei 3 "That person will cast me aside." |
169 | Rei front UP. Rei 3 "Although I've been longing for that day... (lowers face) now I fear it." |
| 170 | In the darkness, Rei standing in front of Ikari. SE <<RATTLE (sound of Rei standing up from folding chair)>> Ikari "Now, let's go. You have existed for this day..." |
171 | Ikari side profile UP. Ikari "Today, Rei." |
172 | Rei side profile UP. Rei "Yes." |
