Episode #26′, Scene 11: A Void in the Dream
So… hard… to restrain… comments… URGH! I'll just, uh, say that this scene makes me want to cry. It's soooo desolate. Reichu doesn't like thinking about the inevitable doom of the planet she loves. Or the Great Yui-sama — whom she also loves — being all alone in the cold emptiness of space for however long it takes… to, well, start this whole mess all over again.

Upside-down water droplet. |
Reichu: Reminder to self: The econte has some details not included in the Renewal script. Add later. |

447B | Shinji side profile UP. |
Reichu: This cut starts with some … strange blurs. They don't bear much resemblance to Shinji + Yui's Hand, either. Take a look. What do you see? |
448 | Yui underwater, side profile UP. |
Reichu: Not sure if the background effects are in the final. (I.e., my speakers suck.) |

449 | Shinji side profile, UP (no lipsync). |

450 | BGM START: "A Void in the Dream (Yume no Sukima)" Shinji moves away towards the surface. |
Reichu: "Yume no Sukima" 夢のスキマ: Sukima literally means "gap", "crack", "crevice", and so forth, but I thought "void" sounded nicer. I'm kind of curious as to what the title implies for this scene, and for whom. FYI, this is another arrangement of "BORDERLINE CASE". |
451 | Yui sinks away, smiling. |
452 | Shinji slowly rising up towards the surface. |
Reichu: Shinji's brief little speech here was taken pretty much unchanged from bochan_bird. I was without a tweak to make. FYI, the econte specifies the thing Shinji is moving towards as Earth (chikyuu). And if Yui is heading in the opposite direction… |
453 | Above a blood-red ocean. |
454 | Shinji on the surface, with the giant Rei's severed head beyond him. It is cleaved in two along its center line. The left side slides off. |
Reichu: Actually, his line literally means, "What will Mother do?" But the Japanese do this a lot instead of saying "you" and tacking the person's name onto the end ("You will use the forum search tool, won't you, Billy?"). I'm guessing it's to be assumed that he's addressing her directly. And I'm going to resist making the awful pun this shot inspires. :grits teeth: |
455 | The water's surface UP. Light glitters upon it. |
456 | A large tree. Fuyutsuki and Yui in the midst of intense sunlight. (Yui is holding Shinji.) |
457 | Yui side profile UP. Shinji's little hands clap Yui's cheeks. |
458 | Shinji being held. Beyond him, Fuyutsuki continues to gaze into the distance. Yui (OFF) "…together with the human soul that dwells within her." |
Reichu: Ahhh, just for a little change of pace, I'll have these two actually call the Eva "she". Fair enough, right? Yui especially. (That Eva ain't no "it" to her.) Kozo… he's kind of an oldtimer, the sort who would say "mankind" and call anything nonhuman "it" if he spoke English, but we'll have him play along anyway. He needs to be on his best behavior around "Yui-kun", after all . |
459 | The Earth tinged red with blood. |
Reichu: ♪ "It's a SoL's hard life for her, it's a SoL's hard life for her. Yui-sama's all a-lone, off to find a brand new home. It's a SoL's hard life!" ♪ Sorry, yes, I know, that was awful. This cut juxtaposes the present day (or whenever) with a conversation from 2003. It's kind of weird to hear Yui talking about her future self in the third person. The Japanese doesn't specify whether or not she does, actually, so the A2000A translation has Yui referring to herself. ("I will be lonely, but as long as I live… ") But that sounds weird, too, because she isn't the Eva yet when she says it. There is a way to make it work, by translating "sono naka ni yadoru, hito no kokoro to tomo ni" as "together with the human soul that will dwell within her" (since present tense can include "wills" unless specified otherwise). But, you know, that sounds weird, too, since while she's saying this, we see present-day Yui in her purple get-up with a flaming new 'do. I dunno. If anyone has any thoughts on this one, let me know. Fuyutsuki's line literally goes, "Proof that people existed will remain forever." That sounds strange in English, so I went with bochan_bird's take (save one little alteration…). |
